Nov. 25 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers.
City Wants to Sign Cole
Manchester City may offer 20 million pounds ($30.2 million) for Chelsea defender Ashley Cole in the January transfer window, The Sun reported.
City could pay Cole, who has two-and-a-half years left on his contract, as much as 130,000 pounds a week. Cole, 27, is currently paid 82,000 pounds a week, less than teammates Frank Lampard and John Terry, the paper said.
City may bid for Arsenal defender Kolo Toure, as well as putting an offer in for Germany and Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski in the January transfer window, the Daily Telegraph reported.
In addition, manager Mark Hughes is targeting Chelsea’s Wayne Bridge, as City players Richard Dunne and Micah Richards are struggling with a loss of form.
United-Tottenham Tussle?
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp could be heading for a battle with Manchester United after Alex Ferguson last week said he may recall on-loan striker Fraizer Campbell from the London club, the Daily Express reported.
Ferguson has been impressed by Campbell, who has scored three goals at White Hart Lane. Spurs officials said there is no clause in Campbell’s contract that would allow United to take the striker back in the new year. Tottenham wants to hang on to Campbell until at least June, the paper said.
Ferguson Defends Ronaldo
United manager Ferguson said Cristiano Ronaldo has “every right” to react to taunts from rival fans, the Daily Mirror reported. The Portuguese forward gestured to Aston Villa fans that he is the world’s No. 1 player after he was taken off at Villa Park last weekend, the paper added.
“Ronaldo is a great player, and as such is a target” for fans, the paper quoted Ferguson as saying. “And tell me someone who likes being abused? Will you please point him out to me?” Ferguson added.
Olsson Trashes Dressing Room
Blackburn Rovers defender Martin Olsson “destroyed most things in the dressing room,” after his team lost to Tottenham last weekend, The Guardian quoted him as saying. “I was kicking everything I could lay my eyes on -- doors, bins, cardboard boxes. I don’t know what was broken and what wasn’t,” the Swedish defender said.
Olsson added manager Paul Ince allowed him to vent his anger, telling him “it was better that I showed my feelings rather than not doing anything at all.”
N’Zogbia Slumber
Newcastle midfielder Charles N’Zogbia preferred to stay in bed instead of going on a pre-match walk, The Sun and Daily Mail reported.
The 22-year-old Frenchman said he was too tired to get out of bed for an 11 a.m. stroll before Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Chelsea, the paper said. The player later said he had a leg strain. N’Zogbia, who wants to join Paris Saint-Germain, was left on the bench against Chelsea for the first 76 minutes.
