By Bob Bensch
Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Italy won both singles matches to take a 2-0 lead over the U.S. on the opening day of the Fed Cup tennis final.
Flavia Pennetta beat Alexa Glatch 6-3, 6-1 in the first match on the outdoor clay court in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Francesca Schiavone then defeated Melanie Oudin 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Two reverse singles matches and a double match will be played tomorrow with Italy needing just one victory to claim its second Fed Cup title in three years. The U.S. is bidding for its 18th championship overall and first since 2000 in women’s tennis’s top international team competition.
