Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Matt Banahan scored the only try of the game with 10 minutes remaining to give England a 16-9 win over Argentina in an international rugby Test.
Jonny Wilkinson kicked 11 points for England at London’s Twickenham Stadium, while Martin Rodriguez booted three penalties for the Argentina points.
“This is the third time this year we’ve played Argentina and it’s been tough every time,” Banaham told Sky Sports.
The hard-fought victory evens England’s record after two games of its autumn series. The hosts opened with an 18-9 defeat to Australia last week and finishes its series against New Zealand on Nov. 21.
England was booed off the field at halftime with the score tied 9-9, all the points coming from the feet of Wilkinson and Rodriguez. Wilkinson then missed two penalties in the second half before the home side broke through after 70 minutes.
England worked the ball to the left of the field, where Banahan took a pass from Lewis Moody and ran down the touchline for the try. Wilkinson’s conversion made the score 16-9.
Argentina then moved the ball down to the shadow of the England goal line three times, but was unable to get the try that could have tied the game.
New Zealand made it three straight wins on its end-of- season tour with a 20-6 victory over Italy in Milan. Luke McAlister kicked five penalties and Corey Flynn scored a try as the All Blacks remained perfect in 11 matches against Italy.
Scotland beat Fiji 23-10 in Edinburgh in its opening autumn international, with Johnnie Beattie and Graeme Morrison touching down for the Scots and Phil Godman kicking 13 points.
