Maradona’s Argentina May Play England at Wembley (Update1)

By Alex Duff

Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Diego Maradona’s Argentina is in talks to play archrival England at Wembley stadium in a World Cup warm-up match.

The game depends partly on national teams not being drawn in the same World Cup group on Dec. 4, Guillermo Tofoni, President of World Eleven SA, which organizes Argentina’s exhibition games, said in an interview. It could go ahead in late March, Tofoni said.

It would resume a soccer rivalry best known for Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 tournament in Mexico, four years after Argentina and Britain went to war over the Falklands Islands. Maradona is now coach of Argentina.

“It would be a spectacle,” Tofoni said.

The Argentine soccer federation, which commands as much as $1 million appearance fees, is unlikely to charge England’s Football Association because both national teams are of the same stature, Tofoni said.

Officials from the FA said they had no immediate comment.

In 1986, Maradona punched the ball into the net as Argentina beat England 2-1 in the quarterfinals on the way to winning the World Cup, later referring it to the “Hand of God.” A year later, he was jeered every time he touched the ball while playing for a world XI against an English Football League team at Wembley.

Argentina last played England at the stadium in 2000 when Maradona wasn’t part of the national team. The warm-up in front of 74,000 fans ended in a goalless draw.

Argentina qualified for the World Cup by winning 1-0 at Uruguay on Oct. 14 and plays Spain in an exhibition in Madrid tomorrow, when England plays Brazil in Qatar.

Maradona will attend a hearing at the headquarters of soccer ruling body FIFA in Zurich this weekend after a profanity-filled tirade following the match against Uruguay.
