U.S. Says 67% of Gulf Oil Output, 62% of Natural Gas Idled

By Tina Seeley

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. energy producers have resumed output for about 33 percent of oil and 38 percent of natural-gas production in the Gulf of Mexico after storms in the region.

Energy companies reported that 4 rigs and 203 production platforms remain evacuated from hurricanes earlier this month, the Minerals Management Service said today in a statement on its Web site. About 870,000 barrels of daily oil production remains shut-in, along with 4.56 billion cubic feet of gas.

The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 26 percent of U.S. oil production and 14 percent of natural-gas output. The Gulf produces 1.3 million barrels of oil and an estimated 7.4 billion cubic feet of gas a day, according to the agency, part of the U.S. Interior Department.

The report is based on responses from 63 companies as of 12:30 p.m. New York time.

Hurricane Ike made landfall in Texas as a Category 2 storm on Sept. 13. Ike came less than two weeks after Hurricane Gustav swept through the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall in Louisiana.
