Marathon's Texas City Refinery Remains Shut by Tropical Storm

By Jim Kennett

Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Marathon Oil Corp., the largest refiner in the U.S. Midwest, said its Texas City, Texas, refinery remained shuttered because of rain from a tropical storm.

Marathon began shutting down the refinery as the storm approached yesterday, the company said on its Web site. The company also evacuated all non-essential personnel from offshore production platforms. There has been no impact on output, it said.

Tropical Storm Edouard, which struck the Texas coast this morning with winds of 65 miles (104 kilometer) per hour, has since weakened to 60 mph as it moves inland, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory on its Web site shortly before 10 a.m. Houston time.

Marathon's Texas City refinery is able to process more than 76,000 barrels of low-sulfur oil a day, according to the company's Web site. The facility is located about 14 miles (23 kilometers) southeast of Houston.
