By Nidaa Bakhsh

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Total SA, Europe's third-largest oil company, will shut down its refinery in Feyzin, France, for about seven weeks of maintenance starting Oct. 19.

Most units will be closed for upgrading and modernization, at a cost of 200 million euros ($284 million), the company said yesterday in an e-mailed statement.

The closure is part of a five-yearly maintenance cycle, Total said.

A second hydro-desulfurization unit will be built on the site at a cost of 70 million euros to meet European Union environmental regulations due be introduced in 2009, Total said.

Customer needs will still be met during the shutdown, the company said. Petrochemical operations not linked directly to the refinery will continue, it said.

The refinery, located near Lyon, has the capacity to process about 115,000 barrels of crude oil a day into products like gasoline, fuel oil, and diesel.
