Million-Dollar `Jeopardy!' Winner Tops Former Champ (Update1)

By Heather Burke

July 21 (Bloomberg) -- Answer: $9,558

Question: How much more has Ken Jennings won as the new all- time ``Jeopardy!'' champion than the amount won by former all- time winner Brad Rutter?

Jennings, a 30-year-old software developer from Salt Lake City, has now taken in $1,164,660, according to the ``Jeopardy'' Web site. He won $29,200 Tuesday, his 35th consecutive appearance.

Last night's victory shot him past Rutter of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as the show's all-time cash winner. Rutter earned $1,155,102 in 2001-2002, according to the Web site.

The show's ratings have climbed with Jennings's winning streak. ``Jeopardy'' ranked first among syndicated programs in the week ended July 11, with 12.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. The show is produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp., and has won 24 Emmy awards, more than any other game show.

``Wheel of Fortune'' was second that week, with 12.3 million viewers. During the previous week, ``Jeopardy'' ranked second, with 11.6 million viewers. The show was third through most of May and June.

Jennings failed to ask the right question in response to Tuesday's Final Jeopardy challenge. He wrote, ``What is Nigeria?'' to the answer, ``In area, it's the largest African country through which the Greenwich Meridian passes.''

The correct response: ``What is Algeria?''

Jennings wagered $11,400 on his final question.

Sony shares have risen 6.5 percent this year.
